What a day! The weather was spot on, the views were stunning, and it was amazing to see so many families out enjoying the event together. There were no flat areas but that was to be expected. Otherwise it was hot but a light southerly was cooling on the ridges. Great to see so many families.

Conditions couldn’t have been better for a Spring rogaine in the first week on summer, on a course that had something for everyone. The map provided lots of route choices. Rolling hills were runnable for the rabbits and easily achievable for the plodders and there were climbs for the more serious. A few shocks from the live fences kept everyone on their toes.
Once you were finished the local community provided excellent catering to refuel.

Those who thought they knew the myriad of tracks at the Milnthorpe Arboretum in Golden Bay soon discovered that things are not quite so obvious at night! Even some very experienced rogainers confessed to being ‘geographically embarrassed’ at times. Set up as a fun event there was a wide spectrum of competitors from first timers through to those who’d competed at multiple events, from seven year olds to those seventy plus. Judging by the chatter and grins at the finish everybody had a good time. When the simple question comes “when’s the next one” you know the event’s been a success.

The weather gods smiled on the Heights of Winter this year. Although it was cold at both the start and the finish, it even was warm during the day. Competitors were rewarded with a challenging but well set course with well placed controls. As the dusk settled, the spectacular full moon lightened the course. The 25th running of this event showed why it is a must for all rogainers, serious or otherwise.

There were disappointingly low numbers for the 12hr event but large numbers for the 6hr & 3hr events. What a wonderful course over such interesting terrain. Mostly the climbs were not long or steep unless you ventured to the far corner of the course. The drizzle continued for most of the day at varying intensity but is was not cold and the ground just soaked things up so it was not slippery. A great venue and event.

Everything worked out for the 2023 Australasian Championships on a course that had something for everyone. The start at midday saw competitors head out into the heat. Hydration was going to be a major factor. If you were lucky and had gained some height there was a gentle cooling breeze. On the flat there were lakes and tarns which were very tempting. You could share these with the Pūteketeke (NZ “Bird of the Century”). Evening brought some respite from the heat and soon the heavens opened to their glory. You can see why this area is a “dark sky reserve”. A rest for those of us that needed it involved lying on your back and gazing at the heavens. A beautiful sunrise welcomed the new day and the heat returned along with strong winds and the trek back to HQ.
Many thanks to the team at Wicked Rogaines for their organization of such a great event.

A fantastic day was enjoyed by teams from all over.
Stoke levels were high throughout the day. One of the farmers commented how happy and excited people seemed to be when he was out and about on the farm.
One school team cleared the course and another student (yr 11) who was a late entry competed in the public event and went solo also cleared the course. Both with about 14-15 mins to spare. Less than a minutes difference. Identical route too!

Heights of Winter has been running for over twenty years. This year the event head quarters was at the Woodchester Station inland from Parnassus.
Each year becomes notorious for something. Snow, rain, wind, electric fences … This year was mud! Three quarters of the course involved trudging through mud. Sometimes deep threatening to pull off your shoes or boots. Very tricky on climbs and descents. Everyone at the finish showed the affects of several close encounters involving face plants or seated slides. But the wet cold weather held off and talking to competitors afterwards, they all reported a great time on the course.

What a day and what a course. The hot days leading to the event turned less hot on the day. But it was still hot although bearable.
You where never going to avoid climb at this location but even after a few minutes from the start your were rewarded views over Lake Dunstan and the Pisa ranges and up to Cromwell at the end.
Many of the clues involved Tors of which there were an abundance in the region. But the traveling was good and if you read the map good routes could be found.

Despite an “iffy” forecast, the weather couldn’t have been better. The course was very well laid out for a competition event with not obvious choices and as a consequence teams scattered in all directions. Check points were not close together and route choice was a major factor. The race HQ was situated in the center of the course with a well stocked hash house in the southern section. The flatter area to the west required very good navigation while to the east the Takitimus beckoned. Top teams planned for the flatter areas during daylight and headed for the hills in the night. But they were not little hills.

The weather bomb that dropped snow over a lot of the South Island missed the course area so although there were remnants of previous snow and a cold wind, the weather was otherwise OK.
A full field in both the 12- and 6-hour events enjoyed a great course that encompassed a wide variety of terrain with areas of native bush and open paddocks, and from flat to steep.
The description of what to do if cornered by a bull in the final information caused some consternation among some competitors but the event was enjoyed by all competitors without major incident.
