Anybody that has a moderate level of fitness can participate. A high level of navigation ability is not required. Teams travel at their own pace and anyone from children to grandparents can experience the personal satisfaction that comes from cross-country navigation at their own level of competition and comfort. Team members stay within earshot of each other.
The best thing about rogaining is the social aspect. Everyone starts at the same time, and generally finishes at the same time, it is just the amount of ground that has been covered by teams that differs. Rogaining can be held in city environments or in farmland and bush, and you get to visit parts of the country you never knew existed.
Kids and families are welcome to come and have a fun time.
Don’t miss it, bring your friends!

The 45th Katoa Po promises a full weekend of orienteering and social activities for all in 2025. This year it will be based near Reporoa, at Hoanga (last used for Katoa Po in 2021) and the adjoining Ngahiwi farm that has been newly mapped for this event. This area has a great mix of open paddocks, rolling hills, scattered trees, rocky outcrops and a patch of forest with some very large old native trees, and is suitable for all levels of orienteering ability.
The weekend will start with a short fun warm-up event on Saturday afternoon.
The Katoa Po night relay will start at dusk, and the explorer rogaine shortly after, and run into the night. The night relay format has been revised, with just a single category of five person club teams, and the eligibility criteria for each leg has been loosened, to make for more exciting racing.
The explorer rogaine for teams of 2 to 5 will run from 8:30 to 11:30 pm, covering a similar but larger area.
A large marquee will provide an all-weather event centre, and an adjacent hill will provide a natural grandstand to view the lights of competitors out on the course. Most people will camp the night in tents and campervans on the paddock alongside.
On Sunday morning a hearty cooked breakfast will be available to purchase from the local school adventure racing team, before a 90 minute rogaine over the same terrain.
Mr Whippy (selling Ice cream and Coffee) will be on site on Saturday evening and Sunday morning.
Location:Cooinbil Hut Campground, Kosciuszko National Park NSW
Duration:24 hour

The Australian Champs are a 24 hour event – starting at midday on Saturday. The challenge is to score points by visiting checkpoints in the 24 hours from noon Saturday until noon Sunday. As well as competiitve teams, there will be many recreational teams participating – your team can come back to the event centre (Hash House) for a sleep or food before heading out again. Catering will be provided at the Hash House during the event with soups, curries and hot drinks to keep your team on the go. Many people will enjoy the event as a fully catered weekend away in the bush.
The championship categories span the three gender categories of women (all female), men (all male) and mixed (any gender mix) – combined with the age categories of open (any age), youth (all 23 and under), veteran (all 45 and over), superveteran (all 55 and over) and ultraveteran (all 65 and over) with age calculated as at 31 December 2025. There will also be an all 30 and under category as a non-championship category – this category has been successfully trialled at the past two ACT championships.
Specific directions to the Hash House will be provided in the final instructions in late February. The event area is all national park with a mix of grassy plains and wooded hills. A few firetrails cross the area, but the course setters think you won’t need to use them! The altitude of the course ranges from 1230m to 1600m and most of the area is nicely undulating with a few steep pinches to keep you on your toes.

MTBO score (rogaine) event across the Posrt Hills. 6hr or 3hr options available.
A series of rogaine events–one each in June, July, and August–that take place in various locations near Te Anau. Each event will take place in a different area. These events will be a great opportunity to practice real bush navigation. All course areas are well bounded by natural features and/or trails. Each event will feature at least 10 controls. Find as many or as few as you want in the time limit.
ALL COURSES are now available on orienteer.co–go play and revisit your favourites and see if you can better your time! Note, you’ll need to create an account to access the courses (for free!) and also download an app (also for free!). The app uses geolocation to tell you when you reach the CPs and also has an ‘easy’ mode to help you learn better navigation! You can also create your own courses and share them with your friends (like us!).
Each race is for teams of 4 students (years 5-8) who will compete in a 2 hour event, which includes a mix of running/walking, navigation and sustainability based activities. Teams will navigate to as many checkpoints as they can, collecting points for each checkpoint visited. To earn extra points teams can complete sustainability themed activities which will require some research and teamwork. Examples of activities could be to identify native bird calls, match a pest to the correct trap used or make something from flax.

Come along and enjoy these weekly evening rogaines in Tauranga and Rotorua during February and March. Check the website for locations.
OBOP Summer Nav is a series of 60 minutes rogaines set in local parks and streets.
In a rogaine you try and visit as many controls as you can in the time allowed, in this case 60 minutes. You will receive a clip card when you register and you need to punch in the box which corresponds to the number on the control, proving that you have visited the control.
Our popular Dogaine event is happening again this year in March! A rogaine is a navigation event in which you and a teammate (and maybe your dog!) compete to collect as many checkpoints in your allocated time as possible. You will receive the map before starting and have a short amount of time to plan out your route. Checkpoints are worth different amounts and you have to decide on the best route and which checkpoints you want to get. Most of the travel is off track and up at Coronet Peak you will have some tussock and rocky terrain to descend.
Please note you will NOT be allowed to run on the mountain bike trails as this is a safety hazard.
You have the options of a 2 hour Rogaine including one ride on the chairlift, or the 4 hour with unlimited chairlift rides. There is also be a special ‘take your dog’ category (hence the name Dogaine) and you can use the gondola car on the chairlift to transport your furry friend up the mountain with you. From the top you will need to plan your way down to visit as many checkpoints as you can. The checkpoints are worth different amounts, rounded to the decade (ie. 32 worth 30 points, 85 worth 80 points etc.)
You should ideally find a teammate to rogaine with, but if you can convince us of your rogaine and outdoor experience we are okay for you to go solo.

Our urban rogaine events have a time limit of 45 minutes. You will receive an A4 map of the surrounding parks and suburbs (without street names) and can access a GPS tracked smart phone app call MapRun for tracking your progress. Thirty to forty control locations will be marked on the map with a circle. Your aim is to visit as many of these locations as you can (or want) in the 45 minute time limit. The points awarded per control vary, so some planning can help. There’s a mystery activity worth 100 points that can be completed between the first and last ten minutes of the event. Emily and Chris Forne bring you an early Christmas present
We are very excited to announce that on Saturday 14 December we will hold a Christmas Rogaine at Country Lane in Frankton. The event will consist of a 2 hour and 4 hour rogaine option. It will be fun and family friendly with a few Christmassy twists along the way. The 2 hour event in particular will cater for kids and beginners to the sport of rogaining.
Chris and I have run many rogaine events over the years, including a very popular Christmas Rogaine on the Port Hills in Christchurch. This year we decided it would be fun to bring the event to Queenstown! We are very lucky to have access to this stunning block of private land above the newly developed Country Lane. The event will be based from the Buzzstop cafe and after the event you can relax on the grass and enjoy some of their yummy food or take a wander down the Lane.
The terrain is quite hilly and in some places steep and cliffy. These areas will be well marked and we will have a suggested beginners route that will avoid this more technical terrain. Most of the map is grassy, with some scrub and low vegetation in areas. The checkpoints will be located on gullies, spurs and different vegetation features which while provide fun navigational challenge.

The St Arnaud Range is a stunning area in winter and summer. It is important to remember that it is part of the Southern Alps and subject to extreme weather. It could be very hot on the event day with no shade, or it could be very cold and windy. Whilst unlikely it could even be snowing, it is a ski area after all. With the right gear and route choice, and the knowledge that you don’t have to be on course for the whole 3-hours, we are confident the event will be a huge amount of fun.
Safety is paramount and participants need to be aware there are many natural hazards to be mindful of, these include, but are not limited to; loose rock, cliffs, steep ground, uneven ground, exposure to sun, wind and weather. Participants will spend most of their time walking on ski field vehicle tracks, rocky scree and tussock basins.

This replaces the event cancelled because of Covid-19 in 2020. The rogaine itself is the culmination of two weeks of championship orienteering events in the general area.
The World Rogaining Championships competition area is about 200 km2 in size located in the Sierra Nevada mountain range north of Lake Tahoe, in California. The average altitude in the area is around 2300m, the highest point is 2700m, and the lowest point is about 1900m. Slopes are mostly hilly with some steep areas and deep ravines. Snow covers the area for 7-8 months of the year which contributes to the forest being very open and runnable with just small patches of thick vegetation. The forest ranges from open grassy areas to mainly pine forest and some rocky outcrops. Streams in the area will be mostly low during the summer.

A great series of early evening rogaines in Tauranga and Rotorua for you to enjoy.
OBOP Summer Nav is a series of 60 minutes rogaines set in local parks and streets.
In a rogaine you try and visit as many controls as you can in the time allowed, in this case 60 minutes. You will receive a clip card when you register and you punch in the box which corresponds to the number on the control, proving that you have visited the control.
When you register you will also receive a map which will have the controls marked on it. If you have never done an orienteering event before ask one of the event officials to give you some pointers.
You will be able to start within a time window. There will be no mass starts this year with the Covid situation. You will be responsible for recording your start time and finish time, and we also ask you to tally up your points on the bottom of your clip card before hanging up your clip card on the results line or handing it to the event official.
You can do the rogaine individually, as a family, or with other friends. You can go as easy or hard as you like.

Katoa Po is a Maori translation for “all night” and the event is the annual interclub night relay hosted by the Taupo Orienteering Club. Teams are made up of seven members, of mixed ages and abilities who contest for the Owl trophy or five members who compete in the first five legs for the Po Kerukeru trophy.
The Katoa Po Explorer is a teams event that has been designed for adventure racers wanting to practise their night navigation and teamwork. This event will comprise a three hour rogaine on Saturday night and a 90 minute rogaine on Sunday morning for teams of two or four. The course has been designed by experienced adventure racers, but will be set for a range of abilities, from beginners to expert.

If you talk to anyone who has been rogaining for a few years they will be able to tell you about TWALK. It is legendary.
TWALK is a twenty-four hour orienteering event. It is split into five legs, each around 15-20 kilometres long.
Each leg has around 10 – 20 controls, which will be hidden on features marked on a map and described by a cryptic clue.
You will be given an event map at the beginning of leg one and a list of cryptic clues.
The first leg is compulsory, as it leads from where you are dropped off to the Hash House.
From there, competitors may choose to participate in as many or few legs as they choose, leaving when they like (there is a compulsory 30 minute break between legs).
Legs two – five form loops which end up back at the Hash House, and can be cut short if required.
A key tradition of TWALK is dressing up! Come up with a costume theme for your team. The best dressed team gets a prize!

The event is mainly in the Pyrenees State Park, with a course of about 130 km². Competitors will appreciate why the area is designated to become a National Park. The terrain is generally hilly, with complex spur gully systems; some of which are steep. This will challenge championship teams’ course planning, fine navigational skills, and mental and physical endurance.
The northern part of the course, where the Hash House is located, is lower and more undulating, well suited to 6-hour event competitors and family and novice teams.
The open native forest is generally fast going, with some areas of light to moderate undergrowth and lots of fallen trees. There are many roads and tracks, and two small areas of clear, fenced, farmland.
Several water points are located on the course, and there is an all-night café, in addition to the Hash House. Mobile phone reception is limited.

Yes it is on. “Big” means that it is bigger that the usual after-work rogaine and “Trig” means that there are some hills! And it is guaranteed to be fun.
New to Climie and Tunnel Gully? Or do you think you know the area like the back of your hand? Regardless you’re guaranteed to be visiting some places you never knew existed at the Big Trig – Climie Chapter.
There will be some “gentle” controls around the flatter areas of Tunnel Gully, but those teams that want to battle for the Big Trig Champion crown will need to bring their climbing legs. With at least four “routes” up Climie, the top teams are almost all likely to have to clamber up that hill twice. You’ll also be rewarded if you like getting your feet wet or if you’re prepared to sidle around the odd bit of blackberry bramble.
With a 6-hour and 3-hour option, there’s something for everyone in the last Wellington-based Rogaine for the 2022 season.
